93: The Stress You Can Control

We talk a lot about managing stress—but what if some of the stress you're trying to manage could actually be removed?

There are absolutely stressors in life that are outside of our control. Illness happens. People we love struggle. Unexpected expenses show up. Difficult seasons come whether we're ready for them or not.

But there's another category of stress we don't talk about nearly enough: the stress we create, tolerate, or amplify through our own choices.

Our schedules. Our spending habits. The time we go to bed. The people we give access to our lives. The content we consume. The things we procrastinate. The expectations we place on ourselves. Even the attitude we bring to circumstances we cannot change.

In Episode 93 of the Lifestyle School Podcast, we're taking an honest look at the stress we actually have some control over.

Because stress management isn't always about adding meditation, supplements, breathwork, or another wellness practice to your routine.

Sometimes the most effective form of stress management is changing the behavior that's creating the stress in the first place.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • The difference between stress you cannot control and stress you can control or influence
  • Why the goal shouldn't be eliminating stress altogether
  • How an overloaded schedule can become a self-created source of chronic stress
  • Why every "yes" costs you time, energy, attention, or opportunity somewhere else
  • How spending habits can create ongoing background stress
  • The difference between not being able to sleep and not giving yourself enough opportunity to sleep
  • Why boundaries are an important part of stress management
  • How social media and constant information consumption add to your mental load
  • Why procrastination is stress with interest
  • How preparation and simple systems reduce everyday friction
  • How unrealistic expectations can make difficult circumstances even harder
  • Why changing your attitude doesn't mean pretending everything is okay
  • How chronic overwhelm can make healthy eating, exercise, sleep, and other health behaviors much harder
  • A simple Stress Audit you can use to identify what you can actually change

The Stress Audit

Write down the five biggest sources of stress in your life right now and ask yourself:

  1. Can I control this?
  2. Can I influence this?
  3. Am I doing anything that's making this harder?
  4. What is one decision I could make that would reduce the friction?

You may discover that some of what you're carrying truly is outside of your control. That's where acceptance, resilience, support, and healthy coping matter.

But you may also discover places where you have more power than you realized.

Ownership is not blame.

Blame asks, "Whose fault is this?"

Ownership asks, "What can I do about it?"

You don't need a stress-free life. You need enough capacity to handle the stress that's actually worth carrying.

So before asking, "How do I manage all of this stress?"

Try asking:

"Is there any of this stress I could stop creating?"
